Want to know the best LAR-10 7.62 firearm to buy for Pig Hunting? Review of the RRA LAR-8 Model 308A1279 Rock River Arms Firearm by Archie McClure
What is it people really think of when they think "Pig hunting rifle"? Forget about your PaPas old rifle, appears like things are evolving and the LAR-8 is the firearm of choice for Pigs. Recently I ultimately purchased my very own RRA Entry Rifle AR10 Model 308A1279 RRA Standard Operator through my nearby transfer retailer. Here is my review of an excellent weapon at a great value. A Pig hunters dream.
Well, there are lots of firearm makers these days taking caliber out of the debate by building AR-style rifles in .308. This, of course, starts another debate as to whether the LAR-8 started as 7.62. Looks like with the 7.62 in AR we are going back to the future
I set 5.56 to the side and selected .308 based on the power punch I needed for hunting. New from RRA, how about a 7.62 firearm that functions like an AR? The LAR-8 Standard Operator will certainly provide the power, accuracy and versatility modern shooters really want.
Oiled up and smelling good from Rock River Arms, the first thing you notice upon assembly is that you have a stout yet maneuverable firearm in your hands. It is a 7.62 and heavier that its lighter counterpart 5.56, but balanced well. A fine rifle indeed tricked out with a Operator A2 stock. An especially nice touch is the "half-quad" hand guard. Don't let the term half-quad fool you, you may think of just two rails, but don't worry, it has all four.
The flip-up front sight is a well-built unit with stout ears protecting the adjustable front post. Quality looks to be the name of the game for this rifles iron sights. There is one on each side of the barrel and one below allowing you to mount any sort of sling system you would like.
I love the look of a bayonet, but lets face it, who uses a bayonet? Why not make it a small rail instead of a bayonet lug? There was just enough room on the rail under the sight for a laser and I also added a Harris bipod. The bipod mount easily and flipped forward like a charm. But to tell you the truth, when it is all said and done, the rifle without the rear sight will give you flexibility.
My case was take apart style which limited optics Case really did not matter, I am all about the firearm and the case matters not.
Rapid fie is not a problem for this rifle. In this case, let's say five would be the minimum.
If you have ever handled an AR-style rifle, the controls on the LAR-8 will be almost second nature. I say almost, because there are two small changes on this firearm. The RRA magazine release button is ambidextrous and can be activated from either side of the rifle and the bolt release is located at the bottom rear of the magazine well. A trigger finger ambi bolt release is a great feature. While I am on the topic of the magazine release, the Standard Operator uses FAL metric and L1A1 inch magazines. So there should be no trouble finding 20-round boxes for your reloads.
Now, on to the shooting with my new .308 rifle and Eotech in hand. I started plinking at 25 yards, it was dead on. Finally after 50 to 75 yards, I braced the rifle on the post and started dropping rounds on the 100-yard target. Scoring minute-of-bad guy hits on everything I pointed at, combat accuracy was outstanding.
This prompted me to drop a few sandbags on the bench and drop some rounds down range in an effort to see where they would fall if I was really trying to shoot a nice group. I fired as fast as I could get the dot back on group. I am happy! Better than advertised, 1.5 MOA.
The 168 ammo worked great and seemed be consistent with several brands. Another feature I really liked was the sealed battery storage area behind the rubber butt plate of the Operator A2 stock. Push the Operator butt plate button on the left side of the butt plate and it slides down exposing a storage area for several of the CR123 batteries.
AR 7.62 caliber rifles are proprietary with all AR manufactures, that is just the way it is. Alternately the 5.56/.223 AR weapons are generally compatible for an almost endless number of parts combinations. Each maker has apparently come up with what they consider to be the best idea for some part or another with their own .308.
As stated on the RRA website, the LAR-8 uses a unique receiver thread and barrel nut. Use only RRA approved parts for modifications. Although some other barrel nuts may thread onto the LAR-8 upper receiver, the depth of thread is incorrect. Better safe than sorry, enough said.
A firearm that clearly offers power and versatility For combat use, more penetration for buildings and vehicles. Deer or hog hunting firearm, no problem, with the Standard Operator you can hit hard and fast with no debate.
