Selecting Your Night Vision Equipment   by Shawn Robinson

Nearly half of each day's hours occur between dusk and dawn, under dark conditions. Most outdoor activities generally come to a halt when the sun sets due to the fact that humans inherently have poor natural night vision without the aid of some type of artificial light. Most people just acknowledge and deal with this reality simply due to the fact that people are not aware that affordable night vision equipment is widely available.

Though most people don't realize it, night vision equipment is available for purchase to the general public. A lot of people are under the false impression that these items can only be owned by law enforcement or military personnel. Of course it's a fact that equipment like special application night vision rifle scopes are only available to these entities, but there are many more products on the market that anyone can buy. In fact the average American can buy and own top military grade products like night vision goggles, night vision monoculars, and night vision binoculars. The only restriction is that a handful of the higher end products can't leave the United States.

Even though night vision technology has been around for nearly fifty years, these devices remain underused. Generation 1, or Gen 1, night vision technology was actually developed during the era of the Vietnam War yet it's still available now as low-cost entry point into the world of night vision. While Gen 1 night vision products provide notably better viewing in the dark over naked eye seeing, this increased ability pales in comparison to what US Generation 3 technology offers.

Generation 3 night vision products seem expensive by some, but the benefits of using such equipment often seem priceless to the person using it. It all comes down to the ability to see but not be seen. This ability offers virtually endless potential. The benefits include, but are not limited to, enhanced capabilities in surveillance, camping, maritime navigation, search and rescue, astronomy, hunting, blackout situations, wildlife observation, and even security.

Among the more common questions about night vision, are questions regarding the variances in the 3 gens of night vision. Obviously the price increases from Generation 1 to Generation 2, and from Generation 2 to Generation 3, but the benefits do as well. On a spectrum of 0-100%, 0 being unassisted human vision and one hundred being roughly equal to normal daytime seeing abilities, each generation offers its own spectrum of intensified night vision capabilities. Visual abilities for Gen 1 range from ten to twenty percent, Generation 2 from 50-60%, and Generation 3 from seventy-five to eighty-five percent. At the same time, the longevity extends with each of these gens. Operational life of Generation 1 devices is roughly 500-1,000 hours, while Generation 2 offers two thousand hours, and this figure grows to ten thousand for Generation 3 products.

Deciding which generation of night vision product to select is often tough to figure out without the advice of experts. Items to consider in this decision come down to available accessories, specific application, and personal preference. An example of this is that some people opt to save money by going with a Gen 1 product, only to find that they are disappointed in its functionability. But a user's experience is often greatly improved with magnification and hands free accessories, among others.

Clearly there's quite a wide variety of night vision items and accessories out there, which creates virtually endless combination choices. From weapon mounted night vision sights to infrared illuminators, the more one learns about night vision products the more prepared they will be to make a smart purchasing decision.
