Make Shofar
Shofars & Simchat Torah by William Kadutzi
Simchat Torah, also known as Simkhes Torah, is an annual celebration of the Jews that marks the conclusion of the annual Torah reading cycle. It also heralds in the beginning of the new cycle of annual Torah reading. Simchat Torah immediately follows the sukkot and falls in the month of Tishrei. One of the symbols of the Simchat Torah is the blowing of the shofar. You also find people draped in their traditional tallit during Simchat Torah celebrations.
Simchat Torah celebration
The celebrations of Simchat Torah take place during the Morning Prayer and the Evening Prayer in the synagogue. In some of the conservative Jewish congregations, this is the only time during the year when the Torah scrolls are read at night after they are taken out of the ark. During this time, both in the morning and the evening, people leave their seats in the synagogue and engage in dance and music along with the Torah scrolls. This celebration of joy often lasts for hours. Aliyah is also announced for the male members of each family during the Morning Prayer. And in the middle of all this, the blasts of the shofar make the occasion all the more joyful.
Shofar
The shofar is a hollow, curved musical instrument that is used during all Jewish celebrations. The shofar is most often blown during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. But it is not uncommon to hear the shofar blasts during sukkot and Simchat Torah. Apart from being blown during religious celebrations, shofars are also blown to announce wars, to declare holidays, at the start of any religious procession and as a musical accompaniment.
Making the shofar
The horns of kosher animals are used to make the shofar. The horns of cows and calves are not used. Antlers of animals like deer cannot be used to make shofars because they are not hollow. In order of preference, the curved rams horn shofar is the most popular shofar. The kudu's horn that is used to make the Yemenite shofar comes second in preference. Curved horns of other kosher animals come next in preference. Straight horns of rams or kudus are also not forbidden but their preference is lower.
Buying the shofar
There are many websites from where once can buy shofar. The best websites are those that only sell traditional Jewish items like the shofar and the tallit. Google and other search engines give you a long list of such websites. Reading about shofars in online article websites and buying shofars using the links they provide are also preferred.
