Camouflage in Tactical Gear by Allen Smith
Camouflage is a difficult issue in the field of tactical gear. There are so many different environments in which we execute missions today, it's not easy to match your equipment to the environment, much less the many settings in the varied MOUT environment. A single area can contain forests, urban terrain, grassland, and possibly even barren wastelands in higher elevations. There's no lack of options out there in camouflage patterns, so how do you make a decision?
Camouflage in Tactical Gear
So let's look at the theory involved in camouflage. It all centers around concealment and obscurity; keeping in mind those who will be observing you. That's right -- when trying to conceal or obscure yourself with your tactical gear, you should be thinking from the point of view of the person who you don't want to detect you. It's all about deception.
Cryptic Camouflage
Also known as vanishing into your surroundings. This method is easily seen in the 'old' military tactical gear with brown, green, and black camouflage patterns. They were used to blend in with plant life, bark, and shade in the background while breaking the silhouette that the human brain logically seeks when looking for another person.
Disruptive Camouflage
This is the reverse of cryptic camouflage. The intention is to confound the observer's visual cues such as size and shape. A great illustration is a smoke-screen used to hide movements, number of people, and type of tactical gear.
Mimicry Camouflage
This is precisely what it sounds like -- using tactical gear and tactical equipment to look like different than what you are. One renowned example is General George Patton's ghost army during World War II and the taking of Normandy Beach. It was an entire army of inflatable equipment, empty tents, and soldierless command centers used only to imitate the real thing and confuse the enemy. Debatably, another illustration would be the ghillie suit that is used to make the user look like grass and undergrowth.
Countershading
The function of countershading is to make light spots dark and dark spots light -- just like you're attempting to do when using camouflage paint to your face and hands. This confuses depth perception and rattles the observer's sense of sight and shape -- note I said observer again. It's central to think from the point of view of the individual you're trying to conceal yourself from. Think Thayer's Law, the artist who originally developed the concept, when you're using countershaded tactical gear.
So that's it for the essentials of camouflage. Remember these four items in mind and you're ready to execute effective concealment and obscurity with your tactical gear.
