The Max Oscar Arnold Doll Company Bisque Head Creations by Annabella ANN Davis
Established in Neustadt Germany in 1878, the Max Oscar Arnold Doll Company was best known for its talking, singing, walking, and bathing mechanical dolls which were produced until the 1930's. Around 1906, the doll manufacturer started producing phonograph dolls which was called Arnoldia. The doll spoke in three languages in which the company used a phonograph technology for it. These were marketed to teach children some lessons in language and records were available separately for purchase.
In 1919, the Max Oscar Arnold Doll Company acquired the Gebruder Knoch Doll Company which was founded by Ernst and Christian Knoch in 1877. The brothers had a porcelain factory also in Neustadt Germany near Colburg. The Knoch bisque doll heads were not marked until the company was purchased by Max Oscar Arnold. The doll markings at that time were "G.K.N. , mold number, Germany, dep, and Ges N Gesch. Its label had crossed bones at the center. The mold numbers that were marked on the Gebruder Knoch dolls were 179, 181, 185, 189, 190, 192, 193, 199, 201, 203, 204, 205, 206, 208, 216, 217, 218, 223, 230, 232, 237, and 246.
Nonetheless, Max Oscar Arnold had their own molds and designs but their dolls were not generally named. The MOA markings include an eight-pointed polygon which looks like a star and inside it is the acronym MOA then the doll's mold number and the label "Made in Germany" were situated right below the polygon. Other markings also include an eagle above a disc with the eight-pointed polygon and still with the MOA mark. Another mark had a winged gargoyle type creature grasping a box with the letters MOA inside it.
Here are some of the dolls manufactured by MOA:
1) Doll (15 to 30 inches tall) = These dolls had bisque socket heads, wood or composition fully jointed doll bodies, glass eyes, painted lashes, wigged, and were open-mouthed showing its upper teeth. The markings are MOA/ 200/ Made in Germany/ Welsch.
2) Doll (15 to 28 inches tall) - This type of dolls was made of shoulder head on a kid body. It had glass eyes, painted lashes, wigged hair, and it was still open-mouthed with its upper teeth showing from it.
3) Arnoldia - This doll measured 30 inches and had a bisque socket head on a wood or composition body. This one had a phonograph inside, sleep eyes, mohair wig, painted lashes, open mouth with its upper teeth showing, and then the mark "Arnoldia 54/14" on some of the batches.
For collector of Max Oscar Arnold dolls, one can still get pieces of the company's creation in auction sites found online. The price of a good condition doll can be around $245 or more.
