Design and Implementation
The Chevrolet Beretta came at a time when the front-wheel-drive coupé was coming to the fore. It sold for 9 years from 1987 to 1996. Berettas were cheap and good-looking and you will find that no matter how bad a coupé is as long as it looked good it would sell. The Beretta came with the right formula from the start and had good engines to add more appeal to its stellar looks.
Powerplants
The Beretta was small so modest power would mean it could be sporty. It started out life with a 2.0 litre 4 cylinder engine that made less than modest power. At 86 horsepower, it was not enough to match the sporty look with sporty performance. The Beretta then had a 2.2 litre engine with 120 horsepower and 130 pounds per foot of torque. This was enough but demand for the 2.8 litre V6 engine made it the best seller. The 2.8 litre engine made 135 horsepower and 165 pounds per foot of torque. This was the GT model and came with upgraded suspension and decals. In 1990, the best engine sold in the model and the cost was about $14,000. This engine was a 4 cylinder however it made more power than the previous V6 and 4 cylinder engines. It was a 2.3 litre Quad 4 and made 180 horsepower and 160 pounds per foot of torque. It sold as the GTZ model of the Beretta and had only a 5 speed manual transmission. The engine was very well designed with a double overhead cam setup and 4 valves per cylinder. Although Chevrolet never sold it, there was a turbocharged version of this engine that made 250 horsepower. It raced in Indianapolis Racing meets at the time and was very successful winning over 30 races in its class. The engine is a hard to find today and is cherished. The other engine Chevrolet sold with the Beretta was the 3.1 litre V6. This had 160 horsepower and sold only with the 3 speed automatic. It was slow - the Beretta hit 60 miles per hour in 9 seconds with this engine. The 2.3 litre Quad four did it in 7.5 seconds and it finished the quartermile in 15.6 seconds at 91 miles per hour. These times were moderate when compared to Japanese and German offerings at the time and there were cars in the same price range hitting 60 miles per hour in less than 7 seconds.
What to Buy
Go for the 2.3 as it is well worth it. It will also increase the value of your Beretta when you sell it.
