How To Make Medieval Armor   by Tyler Quinn

When seeing a full suit of medieval plate armor many people wonder as to how a craftsman hundreds of years ago could build such magnificent pieces of art largely with hand tools. The secret is that building armor is not as complex as you would think. The techniques are fairly simple to master and you can get started making medieval plate armor with a couple simple tools.

The most used tools when building armor are hammers. You can begin making medieval armor with only a couple hammers. One hammer that you'll need is a flat faced hammer for smoothing out the surface of the steel, called a planishing hammer. You can use a light autobody hammer for planishing.

Another hammer that is required to make the complex curves found in many pieces is a dishing or doming hammer. This is usually a hammer that you will have to grind so the face has a rounded surface. You can modify a three pound ball-peen hammer for this. Also recognize that any bumps on the face of the hammer will be transfered into the armor surface, so it's critcal to keep the surfaces of the hammers polished.

You will also need a way for cutting the patterns out of sheet steel. This is hopefully a throatless shear. A jig saw with a metal cutting blade will also suffice if that is the only thing that you have. When utilizing a jig saw be sure to clamp the sheet steel down to your work bench so the sheet metal will not jump around everywhere. Also it's a requirement to wear hearing protection, a dust mask, leather gloves, and safety glasses when cutting steel.

The main material utilized in constructing armor is steel sheet metal. The easiest sheet steel to work is cold rolled mild steel. Sixteen gauge steel is the most often used thickness in reproduction armor, but the gauge can change from 12 to 18 gauge. The easiest steel to form and work is cold rolled mild steel. Sixteen gauge steel is the most often used thickness in reproduction armor, but the thickness can vary from 12 to 18 gauge. As a beginner, you'll probably want to use sixteen gauge steel. That way you can concentrate on building skills and techniques rather than having to form thicker steel, which can be difficult.

The process of constructing armor is relatively uncomplicated as well with practice. Many of the techniques utilized are transferable from one piece of armor to another.
